Any corner, plain numbers or "Page N", and where the count starts.
A new document — your original is untouched.
Numbers are drawn as text with a standard font, so they stay sharp at any zoom, print cleanly and can be selected and searched.
On pages with a stored rotation the number is placed so it appears upright in the corner you chose, rather than rotated with the underlying page geometry.
The number is appended as additional content in its own graphics state, so nothing already on the page is displaced or overwritten.
Add page numbers to an existing PDF. The number is drawn onto each page using Helvetica — one of the fourteen fonts every PDF viewer is required to provide — so nothing is embedded, the file barely grows, and the number is real selectable text rather than a picture of a number. Position, size, starting number and format are all yours to set, and pages that carry a stored rotation are handled properly: the number appears upright in the corner you picked, not sideways off the edge, which is the usual failure of tools that ignore rotation.
