Extracting tax from a total is a different calculation from adding it, and getting it wrong overstates the tax by a predictable amount.

Net, tax and gross together means no follow-up arithmetic to file an expense or an invoice.

Both directions matter: retailers quote prices before tax in some countries and after tax in others, and the arithmetic is not symmetrical. Removing 8% from a tax-inclusive total is not the same as taking 8% off it. No jurisdiction is assumed — you set the rate, because sales tax varies by state, county and even city.
