Calculate return on investment, and the annualised rate that makes it comparable.
For the annualised rate
Return on investment
100%
Gain of $1,000.00
Annualised return
14.87%
Per year, compounded
Formula
(2000 − 1000) ÷ 1000 × 100 = 100%
What this assumes
A doubling

Negative returns handled
750What you invested and what it is now worth, or what you got back.
Optional, but without it you only get the simple return, which cannot be compared across different timeframes.
Simple ROI measures total gain; the annualised rate measures how hard the money worked each year.
The single most misleading thing in investment reporting is a headline total return with no timeframe attached.
Negative returns and total losses produce correct figures rather than errors or nonsense percentages.
"2.4× your money" is often more intuitive than "140% return", so both are given.
Enter what you put in and what it came back as to get the net gain and the return as a percentage. Add a duration and you also get the annualised return, which is the figure that actually allows comparison: doubling your money is +100% whether it took one year or twenty, and only the annualised rate distinguishes an excellent investment from a mediocre one. Both are shown side by side with the distinction spelled out.
