Flipping horizontally and vertically together is a single encode, not two, so a JPEG is not compressed twice.
Front-facing cameras usually save the mirrored preview you saw, which is why text in the background reads backwards. One horizontal flip corrects it.
For PNG and WebP the flip is exactly lossless — the same pixels, rearranged.
Flip an image along either axis. Horizontal mirroring is the common one — it corrects selfies taken on a front-facing camera, which most phones save mirrored, and it reverses text scanned or photographed through a transparent surface. Vertical flipping is rarer but useful for reflections and for images stored bottom-up by some scientific and CAD formats.
